Nisida, Naples:  On the way to carrying out surge operations in support of Operation Active Endeavour, Standing NATO Maritime Group 2, NATO's high readiness Frigate force in the Mediterranean, conducted a manoeuvre exercise. The close formation manoeuvring offered an excellent training opportunity for bridge watch keepers.

With the ships sailing in very close proximity, a Sea Lynx helicopter of the German flag ship Bayern provided an excellent photo platform for views of the force at sea for Staff Photographer, Lt Roeding, and the photographer of frigate Bayern, Chief Petty Officer Martens.

SNMG 2 is a multinational integrated maritime force that forms part of the NATO Response Force and operates under the command of the Allied Maritime Command in Naples. Permanently activated and held at high readiness, it is a mobile and flexible force that allows the Alliance to respond to today's security challenges.

Operation Active Endeavour (OAE) is part of NATO's multi-faceted response to the terrorist threat. Its mission is to conduct maritime operations in the assigned area of operations to demonstrate NATO's resolve to help deter, defend, disrupt and protect against terrorism. As the Alliance has refined its counter-terrorism role in the intervening years, the operation's mandate has been regularly reviewed and its remit extended.
