France moves on reintegrating NATO’s military structure

27 Jul 2009

The Supreme Commander Allied Powers Europe, Adm. James Stavridis, held talks at SHAPE headquarters today with the incoming commander of Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, French General Stephane Abrial.

When he assumes the duties of Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk, Va., General Abrial will become the first non-American ever to hold that post. Earlier, at a July 20 change of command ceremony, French Lt. Gen. Phillippe Stoltz became the first French commander of Joint Command Lisbon. Admiral Stavridis, who presided over the ceremony, highlighted that the event marked the full reintegration of the Republic of France into NATO's integrated military structure.
