Royal Navy warship HMS Chatham has arrived in the Gulf of Aden to take part in NATO's Operation Ocean Shield - the code name for NATO's counter piracy mission off the Horn of Africa and into the Somali Basin. Along with other multinational Task Groups and warships in the area, HMS CHATHAM will help to protect the merchant ships, many of which bring goods in to the UK, as they transit this busy sea area.

At 07:44 a.m. local time, HMCS Fredericton received reports from her helicopter during aerial patrols in the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) that they had spotted a small skiff loitering beside the shipping corridor approximately 45 nautical miles away from the ship. The helicopter, call sign "Stalker”, closed the position of the vessel. Upon detection, the skiff attempted to flee from the location but was stopped when Stalker continued to hover in front of the skiff to block the escape. After several attempts to try and flee the area, the skiff's occupants stopped their engines and waited.

Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo - U.S. Army Col. Victor Torres led about a dozen Soldiers from the Puerto Rico based 92nd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade on a recent visit here.
It was the Soldiers' first look at what eventually will be their duty station when they take over NATO peacekeeping responsibilities later this year from the North Dakota based 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade of KFOR 12 (Kosovo Forces).

NATO AIR BASE GEILENKIRCHEN, GERMANY – Today, at 1400hrs a NATO Trainer Cargo Aircraft (TCA) left Geilenkirchen Air Base with a humanitarian relief camp module from the Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA). The camp will be set up in Haiti and will host around 100 relief workers from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia. It includes beds, chairs, a kitchen, water purification units and toilets. The camp is sponsored by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, announced his decision to appoint Ambassador Mark Sedwill as the new Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan.

Ambassador Sedwill, who is currently the British Ambassador to Afghanistan, is due to take office after the London Conference on 28 January.

Five Afghan National Police officers and six Afghan National Army soldiers have been trained on night vision goggles and thermal cameras.
The 10 day course, which took place at Camp Dogan in Kabul, qualifies Afghan National Security Force personnel to instruct other ANSF members in the operation and maintenance of this vital equipment.

The Czech Republic-led provincial reconstruction team here and the provincial agriculture department completed two dairy centers in the Malak Abdullah Jan and Shikak villages in Pol-e Alam city in the Logar Province.
Since milk is a source of income for many in these villages, the completion of these dairy centers will benefit about 7,000 people in the area, according to a provincial reconstruction team assessment.

HMS Chatham joins other ships in NATO's Task Force 508, including warships from Canada, Denmark and the USA, to patrol round the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.
In March, she will also become the flag ship for Operation OCEAN SHIELD, when she will take over this responsibility from the Danish HDMS Absalon.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has lauded the work of the NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) Civil Military Fusion Centre and Civil Military Overview (CFC/CMO) Experiment, and has called it "an unparalleled capability.”

Monday, January 18, the 3rd Brigade of the Afghan National Army led a major operation to improve freedom of movement on the axis between the village of Tagab and Nijrab in the province of Kapisa.

The HDMS Absalon is no stranger to counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin. Until March 2009, she participated in Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, a multinational task force conducting counterpiracy operations to detect and deter piracy in and around the Gulf of Aden.

Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft from the NATO Air Base in Geilenkirchen, Germany, will for the next two weeks support Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR (OAE), NATO's maritime counter-terrorism operation in the Mediterranean. The aircraft will operate from the Forward Operation Base in Trapani, Italy.
