Operation Ocean Shield, NATO's contribution to international efforts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa, commenced 17 August after the North Atlantic Council (NAC) approved the mission. Operation Ocean Shield builds on the experience gained during Operation Allied Protector, NATOs' previous counter-piracy mission, and develops a distinctive NATO role based on the broad strength of the Alliance by adopting a more comprehensive approach to counter-piracy efforts.

MONS, Belgium – Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), welcomed NATO's new Secretary General, His Excellency Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), on August 12. This was Mr. Rasmussen's first visit to SHAPE, the headquarters of NATO's Allied Command Operations, since becoming Secretary General.

On Wednesday 5th August 2009 Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), made his second visit to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. He was accompanied by the NATO Secretary General (SECGEN) Anders Fogh Rasmussen who was on his first visit to the region since taking office on 1 August 2009.
