NATO’s OPERATIONAL MENTOR AND LIAISON TEAMS (OMLTs)
May 2011
• The Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT) programme is an important part of NATO-ISAF’s contribution towards the development of the Afghan National Army (ANA).
• OMLTs provide training and mentoring to the ANA. They also serve as a liaison capability between ANA and ISAF forces, co-ordinating the planning of operations and ensuring that the ANA units receive necessary enabling support (including close air support, casualty and medical evacuation).
• OMLTs are composed of 11-28 personnel (depending on the type and function of the ANA unit with which it is partnered) from one or several countries. Each OMLT is normally deployed with an Afghan unit for a minimum period of six months.
• There are currently 156 training teams including 76 US Embedded Training Teams (ETT), operating in all five regions of Afghanistan.
• In January 2010, the Joint Coordination and Monitoring Board (JCMB) decided to authorise the expansion of the ANA from 134,000 to 171,600 force level by October 2011. The OMLT requirements to support this growth are under analysis.
