I'm on Capitol Hill next week to update Congress on the successes and challenges of U.S. European Command and the security environment in Europe. As you'd expect, this is a BIG deal for us, and we've been preparing for months. |

If you read this blog regularly, you know I am committed to engaging actively and personally around the region to further our shared security objectives. Last week was yet another busy week of travel in Europe. First up -- a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, where one of my three large "Joint Force Command” headquarters is located. I spent time with my superb French three-star commander, Lt. Gen. Philippe Stoltz. A paratrooper who runs eight miles to and from work every day, Philippe laid out a coherent vision for the future of Joint Command Lisbon that includes a focus on Africa, counter-piracy, and expeditionary activity. |

Since the New Year our focus has inevitably shifted towards the deployment to
Afghanistan to augment the ISAF Joint HQ in
Kabul at the start of 2011. Such a piecemeal deployment is less than ideal and does not make optimum use of HQ ARRC's capabilities as a coherent, rigorously trained and joined up team. Nevertheless, the Staff will gain useful operational experience and make a valuable contribution to the campaign. |

The cyber world really caught my attention about a year ago when my daughter's Facebook account was pirated and her identity used for a swindle. Ugh! Earlier this month, I gave a speech in San Diego that addressed the issue of the cyber domain – what I like to refer to as the "Cyber Sea” (I'm a sailor, after all!). |
