MADRID, SPAIN - NATO will conduct exercises Cooperative Longbow and Cooperative Lancer 2012 during the period 21 to 29 May 2012 in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*. Planning for these exercises began in spring 2011 with the aim of improving interoperability between NATO and partner countries, within the framework of Partnership for Peace program.

Brussels, 26 April 2012 – Chiefs of Defence from NATO member and NATO Partner countries have concluded two days of meetings at NATO Headquarters. Chaired by General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee, NATO's highest-level military gathered in Brussels to discuss key security issues. Discussions focused on NATO operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo, Lessons Identified in Libya, military cooperation with Partners and issues in anticipation of the Chicago Summit (20-21 May 2012).

The first training course for ten Afghan helicopter-maintenance staff got underway at the OAO Novosibirsk Aircraft Repair Plant on 1 April 2012. The 90-day course is taking place in the framework of the Helicopter Maintenance Trust Fund project, which was launched by the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) in April 2011 to build capacity in the Afghan Air Force (AAF) to operate its helicopter fleet more effectively.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Nearly 200 Afghan National Army (ANA) privates spent two days getting down and dirty during urban operations training in southern Afghanistan. This training was part of the team leader course being taught to privates as they get ready to become junior leaders, also known as non-commissioned officers, in the ANA.

April 24, at a flag raising at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (NATO CCD COE), the Netherlands became the 11th country to join NATO efforts at strengthening cyber defence through cooperation. The ceremony follows the signing of joining notes which took place earlier this month at NATO's Supreme Allied Command Transformation, located in Norfolk (USA), welcoming the Netherlands as the newest member to the Centre.

Jeyranchel, in northeastern Azerbaijan, was the site of a live firing range, used from 1955 until 1991 by the former Soviet Army. Now the range lies abandoned and unused, with unexploded munitions littering the ground around it. After completing a similar six-year project in Saloglu, a new NATO Trust Fund project is helping Azerbaijan to continue clearing a deadly legacy of its Soviet past.
