Nisida, Naples 13 July 2012: Rear Admiral (LH) Thorsten Kähler recently transferred from his flagship FGS Bayern to Turkish Frigate TCG Gediz via a ‘Manila Highline'. Accompanied by Flag Lieutenant Roeding, the Commander of Standing NATO Maritime Force 2 (SNMG2) was taking the opportunity to visit one of the frigates under his command to get an insight into the working conditions aboard the ship while at sea. As well as addressing the crew of TCG Gediz he also held a question and answer session. He had previously visited French Frigate FS Courbet. Both ships currently form part of SNMG2.

The name ‘Manila Highline' refers to the rope material previously used to carry out this means of transferring personnel and equipment between two ships underway at sea. The ‘Manila Highline' has long since been replaced by a modern material but the name of the manoeuvre remains the same. The manoeuvre remains challenging and demands involvement of the entire ships' crews.
